My 9 year old daughter, Allison, shot her 1st deer Monday afternoon. Both of my children are hunting this fall and both were very excited.

I bought a Rossi Youth .45 cal muzzleloader this summer and afterseveral practice sessions they were shooting very well. Special thanks to Central Iowa for loaning us a red dot scope, that improved their acuracy dramatically.

We worked hard to put in a BFO plot with our limited equipment.

Allison was first to go on Saturday afternoon but after jumping several deer beside the plot we didn't see anything else before dark.

Sunday was Trenton's turn but he didn't connect. Monday we headed to a different farm and in the heat we set up a Double Bull and brushed it in good. About an hour later a yearling doe, just losing it's spots, came walking in. We watched her for over an hour hoping that mamma doe would come in. Allison decided that she wanted to shoot the yearling so we prepared for the shot. Trying to position the camera, coacher her (with her shooting muffs on) and getting her lined up for the shot proved to be alot of work. With the doe broadside at 20 yards Allison got nervous and was starting make excuses like, "I can't get the gun comfortable" and "the gun is hurting my shoulder." Knowing her as I do I could tell she was getting cold feet and I knew that she would be disappointed if she didn't shoot.

With the doe only 15 yards away now I pulled one of her muffs away from her ear and told her that she did not have to shoot if she didn't want to but I knew that she would be disappointed if she didn't. I told her to pretend she was at home shooting the target, take a deep breath and squeeze the trigger. By this time the doe is 8-10 yards away and is about to walk out of our view into the brush. I re-aimed the camera, plugged my ears and said, "Shoot now.....NOW!......... NOW!!!!! ...and she fired.

The deer disapeared so quickly I couldn't tell if she had hit it. We quickly found blood and then her deer 50 yards away!

Lots of hugs and kisses later, and after photo's were taken, Allison told me that she wanted to buy another tag and go again next week.

She is thrilled and so is Trenton as he knows he is next.

Sorry for the long post. I am a proud Daddy today, a feeling that you can't explain until you've been there. I hope all father's experience this feeling at sometime in their life.!

Miss a couple days of the site and there is a pile of stuff.
