Singer Accused of Illegally Killing Tame Bear

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- Troy Lee Gentry, of the country singing duo Montgomery Gentry, has been accused of killing a tame black bear that federal officials say he tagged as killed in the wild.

Gentry, 39, of Franklin, Tenn., and Lee Marvin Greenly, 46, of Sandstone, appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond Erickson in connection with a sealed indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Minneapolis.

Authorities allege that Gentry purchased the bear from Greenly, a wildlife photographer and hunting guide, then killed it with a bow and arrow in an enclosed pen on Greenly's property in October 2004. The government alleges that Gentry and Greenly tagged the bear with a Minnesota hunting license and registered the animal with the state Department of Natural Resources as a wild kill.

Gentry allegedly paid about $4,650 for the bear, named Cubby. The bear's death was videotaped, and the tape later edited so Gentry appeared to shoot the animal in a "fair chase" hunting situation, the government alleges.

If convicted, both Gentry and Greenly face a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a $20,000 fine. Gentry's manager, Johnny Dorris, said Wednesday that Gentry, an outdoorsman and hunter, expects to be exonerated.

Gentry "relied on the knowledge and expertise of a local guide to obtain the proper permit," Dorris said in a written statement. "Troy felt what he did was legal and in full compliance of the law and was surprised to hear of the indictment."

Greenly did not return a phone message seeking comment.

Montgomery Gentry, along with co-singer Eddie Montgomery, are known for hits such as "My Town" and "If You Ever Stop Loving Me."

Any of you fans of HUnter's Specialties TV show are probably familiar with the bear. They did a feature on Troy Gentry's trophy room a couple of weeks ago and he showed off the full body mounted bear as his greatest trophy.

My wife and I are fans of their music and coincidentally I just showed her the segment last night on TIVO and today the news breaks. Very disappointing to say the least.

Isn't anyone who hunts in a fenced facility doing the same thing? There's a game ranch in SW Iowa that does Bison hunts, and from what I understand you walk right up and shoot your animal. To me this case is really no different! The true scum bag here would be the guide that allowed all of this to go on. Celebrities do stupid stuff all the time, this IMO doesn't warrent jail time for Gentry. But I would suspend all of his hunting rights nation wide for the five year term for going along with such a stupid plan. Bottom line, there will always be some dumba** out there trying to get over! Big game always seems to bring out the worst in people.

SplitG1 you are correct, they also use awesome sized elk. The guy used to raise them and goes out and shakes a bucket of feed and they come running and the "hunter" takes his pick

I heard somewhere that DNR was going to shut the SW Iowa guy down because his wild hogs keep getting out down there. Huge pain from what I gather! The surrounding land owners were told to shoot them on site. I'm not sure if was the DNR or local authorities that told them that, but someone was definitly making a stink about it. It made the local news here in Omaha. Just another very bad miss representation of a Iowa land owner IMO.

Here’s the worst thing. I’ve been telling ya'll for months (the WHA blow-up and all that) that those “canned hunts” or “high-fenced hunts” or “penned hunts” or whatever the hell you want to call them are killing our image. As a hunter this whole sad story makes me feel dirty. We can’t take much more of this BS! I say ban every commercial “hunting” pen under 1,000 acres. What say you?

No way Troy Gentry does any jail time, I'm sure if convicted he'll get a slap on the wrist and a fine.

The outfitter, who obviously has several violations he is being charged with probably won't receive any jail time either although I think he should if he's found guilty of all he's accused of.

Obviously he's no much of a outdoorsman.

Anymore, I am starting to think my wife is right (psst - don't tell her anything regarding that last statement) She always states that she has no desire to ever get an autograph from any type of famous person since she feels that the vast majority have forgotten the daily reality that most of us live within.
