i just recieved this email(3-31)
If you want a Dove season now is the time for action.

My understanding is the folks against a dove season are bombarding the Natural Resources Commission, and that Ms. Garst (who opposes a season) wants to bring this to a vote before she leaves. The anti’s have the lead at this point in communications with the NRC. I’d suggest that we all contact our memberships and ask them to email the NRC in support of the dove season……………and ask that they engage their friends and associates to do the same thing. A simple message is all that is needed—“I support a dove season in Iowa. Please move quickly to accomplish the steps necessary to set the framework for and to hold a mourning dove season in Iowa in Fall, 2011.” Here is the email list for the standing commission at this time—

PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO ALL DOVE SEASON SUPPORTORS THAT YOU KNOW, ASK THAT THEY EMAIL ALL MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION.

Commission Chairman

Richard (Kim) Francisco
Commission secretary

Tammi Kircher
Commission vice chairwoman

Dennis Schemmel

Margo Underwood

Elizabeth Garst

Please do this as soon as possible—and thanks for everything you do for conservation in Iowa.

just because the gov signed the bill, doesn't mean the season is set. liz garst wants a vote before she leaves the NRC. and she is a "NO" vote

Here is her opinion:

Here are a few of the reasons I will oppose a dove hunting season in Iowa:
> 1) I have concerns about the increasing evidence of lead shot contributing
> to the health to the Bald Eagle population. I believe lead shot and waste
> created from dove hunting will contribute to this problem. 2) I believe the
> hunting culture of hunting for food is hard to justify in the case of such a
> small species. 3) The dove population is not known to have any factors that
> are dangerous to humans and/or our built environment. 4) I have seen no
> scientific evidence that shows the dove population is over populated and
> damaging to the balance of nature or natural resources. 5) The are a lot of
> other species that are available for hunting in Iowa which provide a better
> food source and whose populations may need balance. While some will argue
> against every one of the issues I have raised, they are my opinions.
