Apple/Pear Trees

Before he started offering only 2 yr old trees I planted several varieties of 2-5ft tall whips in 2023. A couple varieties have even fruited. Overall very satisfied with everything, even the ones that haven’t fruited yet. I don’t have anything older than 2023 so a lot of learning still ahead. Based on all the blossoms this year it appears I may have more apples/pears pushing first fruits hopefully ! to date top performers that I’d buy again and/or have been grafting more of my own on to varying rootstocks as experiments (B118, G890, G935, anty)
Roadkill- 2 trees fruited 2nd and 3rd year in the ground.
Winter crabarina- 2 trees fruited 3rd year in the ground.
Turning Point- first fruit possibly this year but it’s as advertised for being a late bloomer to help avoid late frost. Also a great looking tree/good grower.
October crab - no fruit yet but great looking tree/good grower.
I plant alot of Seckel and Barlett. Both do really well. Barlett is earlier dropper but is a great producer. Seckel is later.

I added a Fireside in Iowa . We have had great success with Fireside in Minnesota. I would rank it #1 or #2 with Chestnut Crab so far ….

How long do you guys keep tree tubes/cages on your fruit trees ?
Cages pry be there in some form for MANY years. I make the cages smaller & prune the trees to carry branches higher over time. Just so deer don’t rub em or rip em up.
Tubes work themselves out. When tree big enough they bust through or just get to point where u pull tube off & then just make sure cage around it so deer don’t rub.
I have some 15 year old apple trees I still have caged just to be safe. Almost all the fruit falls on outside of cage.
Like any food source or project- there’s always things to fight…. One other side topic…. I trap the daylights out of the coons around all my trees. Little suckers climb up & break stuff off. Now they are extinct on my farm & I will keep it that way

What are those? We have no such creatures anymore!! Anything that eats eggs & nests have been systematically eliminated!!! I think the killing we did on our farm was solely responsible for high skunk prices as wellRacoons are extinct on your farm ?
