apple trees and hard pan

while planting 5 apple trees yesterday i found some hard pan at about 1.5 ft deep...i broke through easy enough, it was about 1-2 inches thick...will this be a problem for my apple trees?
A few years ago we dug up an old, huge oak stump. The bottom of this behemoth was as flat as a dinner plate, cause of the hardpan underneath(could also hear water running underground).

It shouldn't be a problem because most roots will spread out laterally anyway but keep us posted on how your trees do...:)

What state are you in? I have not run into any hard pan's in IA yet. How common u all finding these situations?

What about putting in some turnips or something to break up the hardpan around the apple trees so they can follow the holes created by turnips. Just a thought, unless turnips are harmful to apple trees?

Just make sure you don't plant within 75 ft of a walnut tree or stump. It took me several years before i learned that lesson!
