Meeting to Discuss Proposed Changes to Boat Regulations Set for May 25


SPIRIT LAKE - Proposed changes to Iowa boating laws to improve consistency and clarification will the topic of a public meeting at 7 p.m., May 25, at Gull Point State Park Lodge, on the west shores of West Okoboji Lake.

Proposed changes include establishing zones that restrict boat speed to less than 5 mph to address safety concerns of decreased visibility and environmental concerns of increased water turbidity and soil erosion caused by higher rate of speed. It also changes the speed at which boats can travel on lakes in Dickinson County from 10 mph within 300 feet of shore to 5 mph within 300 feet of shore.

Any interested person may make written suggestions or comments on the proposed amendment on or before May 25, 2010. Written comments may be directed to the Law Enforcement Bureau's website at www.iowadnr.gov or may be sent to the Law Enforcement Bureau Chief, Department of Natural Resources, Wallace State Office Building, 502 E. 9th St., Des Moines, Iowa 50319-0034; fax (515)281-6794.

Persons who wish to convey their views orally should contact the Law Enforcement Bureau at 515-281-5919 or at the Law Enforcement Bureau offices on the fourth floor of the Wallace State Office Building.

At the public hearing, persons may present their views either orally or in writing. Participants will be asked to give their names and addresses for the record and to confine their remarks to the subject of the amendments.

Any persons who plan to attend the public hearing and have special requirements such as those related to hearing or mobility impairments should contact the Department of Natural Resources and request specific accommodations.
