Bruce Braley Insults Iowa Farmers

This news is old but worth talking about since the Bee thread is petering out...

He was implying that Grassley has no experience in the field of law and therefore isn't qualified to head the senate judiciary committee, which is a possibility given the way the system is set up.

Quite frankly, I kind of agree with his statement.

However, Braley showed poor judgment and exposed his weak character by phrasing the statement that way. It is for those reasons I don't think he is the kind of person I want to represent Iowans.

Chuck Grassley has been on that committee since he first went to Washington. I'd say he's plenty qualified. Democrats Dianne Feinstein and Al Franken are also members of that committee despite not being lawyers. I'd much rather have Grassley running that committee than some ultra-left gun hater like Feinstein.

Braley, standing in front of a table of booze, speaking to a group of out-of-state trial lawyers while making disparaging remarks about "a farmer from Iowa" says a lot about how out of touch he is.

I have no formal training in electrical work or plumbing. I've been using one since birth and the other since I was 3. Does that make me a master electrician or plumber?

I see guys doing tree work who have literally been doing it since they were 7 years old (over 30 years) and they still do a lot of things incorrectly.

Just because you do something for an extended period of time doesn't make you qualified to do it.

Would you want Grassley to defend you at a trial where you had to shoot someone who broke into your home? Would you want him to prosecute the guy who trespassed on your property and shot your dog?

There's a reason we have a state bar exam. If Grassley hasn't passed it, he isn't qualified to head or even sit on the Judiciary committee.

That doesn't mean I don't want him in Washington though.

If a politician is a lawyer, he probably isn't a very good lawyer or he wouldn't be a politician. ;)

Did I miss something? Is one of the responsibilities of the members of that committee to defend people at trial?

Passing a state bar exam isn't a requirement to be on that committee.

That doesn't mean that we should allow unqualified people to sit on that committee though, does it?

Well, we have a "community organizer" in the White House, so good luck getting people off the Senate Judiciary Committee because they didn't pass the bar exam.

This:

Senate Committee on the Judiciary – Similar to the House’s committee on the same issue, the Senate’s Committee on the Judiciary deals with judicial proceedings, civil liberties, federal courts and judges, constitutional amendments, immigration and naturalization, patents, and mutiny, espionage, and counterfeiting.

is from the Committee Descriptions on the Princeton Univ. website.

What makes you think that someone without a law degree is qualified to make decisions about these things at a federal level?

Seriously? That's your argument? I thought we were "discussing" Bruce Braleys shortcomings and possible candidates who might make good representatives of Iowa.

Every person elected to the House and Senate makes decisions and votes on every issue listed there. Should they all be admitted to the bar before being allowed to make laws dealing with those issues?

My point, since you missed it, is that the man in the White House is less qualified to be there than the people on the Judiciary Committee.

A Grassley spokesperson told TheIowaRepublican.com, “By the logic expressed on this recording a trial lawyer shouldn’t be involved in policy making about agriculture, or energy, or health care.”

I tend to agree with Chuck here, and you will never convince me we don't have enough lawyers in Washington.

You don't need to be a lawyer to sit on or head that committee any more then you have to have been a 5 star general before you become commander and chief.
All these people have advisors, specialists and also lobbyists helping them out. In the end I may prefer to have a non lawyer heading the judiciary.

I agree about more lawyers in DC. But your first comment has no bearing on the SJC.

We have already established qualifications required.
Do you think Grassley has advisors on the SJC? Who are they? I didn't elect them. I have no say then, in who is really representing me.

I didn't miss it. You failed to make a cogent argument.

Comparing the job performance of one individual to another in an unrelated job is not a valid defense of the first persons lack of qualifications.

Grassley is a farmer, not a lawyer. He has no business making legal decisions any more than Braley has commenting on matters of agriculture.
