what calls worked for you guys over the weekend? grunts, bleats, rattles, snort wheeze?? and did anybody try the buck growl????

grunts worked amazing for me and thats about it. i tried the buck growl a couple times but no luck....

I used some softs grunts and a very soft doe bleat, and really got the attention of some young bucks. Its a little early for the growl, use that when bucks are really chasing and fighting.

growling has worked once or twice for me... you gotta have the right deer with the wrong attitude though. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

its definately not too early,
but like Muddy said, gotta find the right deer with the wrong attitude......

i will be throwing everything at them this next weekend

Rattled 3 times Saturday morning and had 5 bucks come into that and a little grunting itermixed (softer grunts on the buck roar). Got some great video, just no big boys to slide an arrow into.

a guy i hunt with rattled in a 4 1/2 year old 8 pointer last night and smoked him at 18 yards. so they're coming to the horns a little bit. i tired some rattling but didnt get any response. I had some young bucks come into grunting but for the most part it needs another week for the calling to get really good.

I know of two guys killing deer in the past few days using the growl. Both said they growled and both bucks circled down wind at 15yds. One was a 150 ten and one was a 170 15pt.

I growled and rattled in 4 130" and smaller bucks last thursday night.

I tried regular grunts, doe bleats, rattling, and the buck growl this past weekend and I might as well have been whistlin dixie...the deer I saw didn't give to chits about the noise I was making.

Guess on the bright side, they didn't get scared of it either. They just didn't care one way or another.

I growled in a decent buck 2 weeks ago. I think he was more curious than anything. Growled at another on Sunday morning, he got scared and left the timber. I think maybe he has been beat on a little bit already.

difficult to decifer effectiveness of calling from theses posts/ Some have great response, some have litle or non. A few say bigger guys circle dwn wind. I believe to be effective have to be high,,unscentable,or with open space down wind of you. Larger deer, sneaky, if they sense somehting up,,gone.I called in young buck with growl last yr, but every other time I used it,,or bleat, felt sure I'd probably scared nice one away. Still squeemish about blind calling.

dont be afraid to Blind call, some of the most exciting hunts i have been on, resulted in a sweet calling sequence, (blind) and a super cool encounter.

if you dont blind call, you wont ever have a chance to see that buck that might be just out your line of sight.

give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised, Blind calling cant hurt a thing!!

Good Luck!

It depends on how balanced your herd is. A very well balanced herd will have much more responses to a call than a herd with 1 buck to every 20 does.
