chufa in Iowa?

Anyone care to share experience with chufa in Iowa. Plan to have a trial plot this year. I've read about optimal pH & ground prep but haven't seen much on weed control. I'm worried about keeping grasses down as I'm turning over sod to plant. Other than that- any tips? How has it grown for you?

any updates on your chufa plots? i planted a plot w/chufa and other things but planted it late. i hope it comes up in spring. did the turkeys come to it, did you have to pull a few up to get them use to it? thanks

Plots grew very well. They were using a part of the field to dust in this fall. Had pulled a few clumps up & then I ran the disk through part of it but they never really started using it like I thought. Grasshoppers & acorns were so thick that they weren't going hungry. Maybe they'll use it this spring or even before if the ground thaws out.
