I tried it once a long time ago but it didn't do well in heavy ground.
Turkeys scatch the tubers up but I don't think deer would eat the tops much.
I have turkeys coming out my ears though...so couldn't figure out a reason to "attract" them
It's more common in southern states and really is borderline a noxious weed so I would research it a little before planting it.

Both chufa and an undesirable wild relative, purple nutsedge, are considered important food sources for migratory birds but also are considered important weed species.
Thanks for the info. I had not read that it was considered a noxious weed.
I've got a wet spot by the pond that I wanted to plant and thought chufa might be a good bet. The NWTF seems to really like it. I have turkeys, but not coming out my ears though
I planted it one year- grew ok but nothing really used it like advertised. Ground was like Dbl said though- pretty heavy and of course once the soil froze, they were done til spring. I think that a sandy or light soil might make a difference.
Had zero trouble with volunteer or "weed" crop the next year.
