City Deer

I have a question. Why do large numbers of deer congregate near and around cities? I live in Ames, and on any given night, I can drive down Stagecoach Road (1/4 mile East of town) and see 30-40 deer. I can also drive down gravel roads by one of the farms I hunt (1/2 mile South of Boone) and count 50-100 deer in the fields. Both of these counts can be done from the road. Then when I make my way to the out to the country, I'm lucky to see 5-10 deer where there are no people within a square mile. What gives?

General,
What gives is that deer are protected in the city. They are also concentrated in city areas rather then the country where they are spread out. This explains why Des Moines has some monsters in Water Works Park; because there is NO pressure.
