I had someone tell me that when you shine a light in a deer's eye you will see a color of either red or green, and that you can tell the sex of the deer by which color they are. I'm not buying it, has anyone else heard this?
tapetum. Reflective film on the back of the eyeball that allows night vision. You can't tell sex, but you can often differentiate species of animals with it.
I think thats a little bit of a exageration. Every set of deer eyes i have ever seen are green. Most racoons and possums are a orangish red. You can tell the sex pretty easy by looking at the spacing of the eyes, older bucks are usually a couple of inches wider.
