My mom was out fishing our pond (1.25 acre pond) on the dock at the farm, mid day and a 4 pt. buck walked across opposite side of the pond then walked into pond , swam have way across pond, switched directions then walked out and ran down back of dam.
Is this normal behavior for a deer?
 
Deer spend quite a bit of time messing around in the water. Especially on years like this. Just like cattle standing around in a pond or creek to cool off.
I've watched fawns play like little puppies in the water. I guess if I lived outdoors 24/7 I'd be taking a swim every once in a while also
 
Deer actually swim very well. If it was swimming and feeling good enough to run off, it's very unlikely suffering from EHD. Those poor critters are very sick and near death when they come to water.
 
Deer swim, no problem. I know of islands that are bare of trees and deer swim right out there to graze. Pretty big river too.
