DOGS!!

I have 40 acres SE part of Wapello, Co, between two neighbors. One has wife that collects strays. Has 10 dogs I think. Nice folks ,but lets dogs run. Two weeks ago bucks seemed to be chasing. That eve sat watching a clover patch, with does in it and young 8 chasing them grunting,,then doe hightailed it, with two of their dogs after her. They did not chase long, and I chased them twards home. I was so steamed! Called the Mr. right away. He said he'd tell the Mrs but she would only get mad. He tried to make light of it, saying deer were used to dogs around. what makes me mad is he hunts too,,but on 200 acres down the road. Then,,two days later was sitting on a trail on frosty morning, when a turkey came flying by, then a doe with a German sheperd hot behind her. I got down even more mad. Went to other neighbor's house. Little girl came to door, saying,"Did you shoot my Dog", No I said but I should have. I have heard her calling him every morning, when out, so they must let dog run then. I asked to talk to parents, her older brother came to door, said they would not let it happen again. Needless to say,, I have seen less deer, especially any bucks this season and can't not assume, dogs have something to do with it. Out in rural IA, everyone lets dogs run. I talked to someone last summer in County, probably was Secretary, she said no laws about it out in the country. Well there darn well should be. I know everyone last asummer said, SHOOT, ask questions later. I am going to check with DNR see if any law by them regarding dogs running deer. Am going to call to top of County, staff to see where I can go to institute a new law. In MI, where came from, is State law against dogs running deer, with fines. I am still steamed! Yet feel helpless.

i think there is a law against it. call your dnr guy , i think they should be able to help you out. also i think there`s a law that say`s a dog can be put down if it chases deer. had this problem before but i didnt own the land .i just stopped hunting there.

i had that problem one year when i was hunting some ground in illinois. this big doberman would run right up to the tent i was in and litteraly try to attack me. it happened a few times. i called the dnr and he said, well the only tip i can give you is the triple S rule. shoot, shovel, and shut up. luckily i didnt have to waste a bullet on the dog. he attacked some people on a bike a few days after i reported the dog to the dnr. needless to say, hes history.

unleash an arrow on them dogs. Eventually the dogs will get the hint or maybe there owners will and keep them tied up. As for there being a law on dogs running loose i dont think there is one. but on the flip side there is no law about shooting dogs on your ground in the county. You already have done more than i would have by going to the owners twice. If I know that there is a problem with dogs on a piece I hunt I shoot first and dont ask questions. One landowner i hunt on has problems with his neighbors dogs, same sceanerio and he has a bounty on them for 10 bucks a head. Had one dog that would come down and bark at us in the DB while turkey hunting and would stay just out of bow range. We surprised him one AM as i had a buddy that had a gun tag. Had the old 12ga with superfull choke and remington heavy shot in a 3 1/2 inch mag needless to say the heavy shot will role a german shepard at 60 yards. JUST UNLEASH THE HEAT BROTHER.

I'm new to the site and haven't posted or responded to anything. BUT I do know something about this, had the same problem two years ago. I talked with the county CO and the Sheriff...OPEN GAME! Make them disappear, NO laws either way. Look at it this way, once a dog runs deer they always will ask any coon hunter. The dogs have to go to protect your quality hunting. Good luck with everything.

Up here a pet owner is responsible for the dogs running wildlife, it fits into the "harassment of wildlife" section or code. Doubt it ever happens much..guys are more likely tp make the dogs disappear.

Thanks for the advice, so far. I knew the way it would go. I sure would like to follow it, but unfortunately, have to live with my neighbors. Other than the dogs they seem like nice folks, even helpful at times. Hate to make enemies, that can come back to haunt you. Not sure what to do. Try the legal route, maybe get a law enacted, though I know that's a stretch. You all are in agreement dogs running around will definately affect your hunting though. I have to assume it would. Checking out some new ground now, to hunt. Possibly, after this season, will have to at least get serious and dust dogs with shot. Hate to take it out on pets. It is the selfish, short sighted ,bumb, owners that should be penalized. thanks.

I can understand the frustration but on the flip side, I just heard of a similar incident where a bowhunter shot a dog and now there's no bowhunting allowed on that property indefinitely. The dog turned out to be a neighbor's. No big deal I guess if you own your own piece or hunt on somebody that doesn't care either way but it can work against you under some circumstances. Can be one of those things that gives bowhunters a bad name. I'm not saying you should or shouldn't, just raising another point of view is all.

In MN we shoot them. And its legal part of the year. Bout the only time you cant is in the fall during hunting season. My own dog or the neighbors or a stray I shoot them all.

Well, if you take trophy photos and tell everyone you see. Then yes, you might have a problem. I don't think anyone in there right mind would, that is when you need some common sense...

This is a county by county issue check to make sure what goes in your county. Also, if you're going to shoot a dog with a bow, make sure that you can kill it. You don't need a dog running home with your arrow stuck in its a--.

Had a freind shoot a dog couple years back turned out it was the farmers dog only a mile away from its house. He didn't reconise it when it came running by until it was to late. He thought the right thing to do was tell the farmer. Wrong he was kicked off. If your going to do it keep your mouth shut and hide it.

Still think the right way to go is by the law. Don't want people's pets dead, just kept off your land. A leash law is the way to go. I am going to try to make my neighbors understand. The law is on my side, even if there is not one yet. Tresspass is wrong, and dogs chasing deer is wrong. Right is on my side, will have to go from there. Was one thing when way back there were few people scattered across the land, but today is different. More people,,more we have to consider others and their rights. If all fails may have to blast over heads of a few dogs. Might change the dogs habits, and might tell neighbors, you have been patient, but you mean business. Don't think ever would kill one though. Yes hunters don't need any more bad publicity.

I think your making a wise move. I know both dogs and cats can put a damper on our hunting at times, but we need to remember there are far more dog and cat owners in this country than hunters.A couple of crying kids at home could easily turn parents and kids against hunters for life.

I really hope I never live close to any of you guys, and my dog gets loose and chases a deer. I have dogs, most are trained not to run deer, but a dog will be a dog when a deer jumps up in their face and runs. I keep my dogs chained, and away from harms way, but they do get loose on occasion. I have had dogs blow hunts for me, but I have also the neighbors kids blow hunts for me, but I'm not going to shoot either one.

I too had the same problem this year.Warren county has a leash law.Don't know if Wapello has one or not.If they do try to catch the dog call the sheriff have him sent to the pound. Here in Warren county I believe the fine is 100.00 to get them out of the pound. If it continues I believe that you have to go to court to get them out. After a couple of visits the owners might think its cheaper to build a kennel than bail your dog out of the pound. If no leash law then two options call the appropriate legislator to get the law changed or take the dog on a long car ride.I haven't met very many dogs that weren't trainable or stupid just irresposible pet owners or poor trainers.By the way I also hunt in Wapello county and fortunately haven't had a dog problem.Good luck.

.22 bird shot at close range will make 'em think if you just want to scare them. I'd personally use hollow points. Doing it legally will end up being more confrontational with the neighbors and will probably result in hard feelings anyway. You have already tried to be nice. You made an effort and they didnt respond. Use bird shot or shoot, shovel and shut up.

fry some small sponges in bacon grease until they harden, than place them on you property it makes for one big tummy ache and the will remember and stay away
