ND Fenced Hunting Operations Seek New State Regulations
North Dakota deer and elk ranchers who run fenced hunting operations are asking the Legislature to impose new regulations on their business.
The North Dakota Senate's Natural Resources Committee is reviewing the bill Thursday.
The ranchers have fenced enclosures and offer paying customers the chance to shoot a deer or elk that they've raised.
Critics say the business is unethical because the animal doesn't have a chance to escape. They put a measure on North Dakota's ballot last year to ban fenced hunting, but voters defeated it.
Deer rancher spokesman Brian Kramer says operators believe more state regulation will help deflect criticism of the fenced hunting business.
But senators on Thursday questioned whether opponents of fenced hunting will tone down their statements because of state rules.
