Simple question that I seem to get two different answers to. When you are going to put down fertilizer, let’s say 46-0-0 for brassicas and it calls for 300lbs/acre do you put down 6 bags (50lbs each) or because 46-0-0 is 46% of the bag which is 23lbs do you put down 13 bags to hit 300lbs?

This seems simple but maybe I’ve been doing this wrong all this time and putting the bag weight down and not the percentage weight.
 
I don't want to hijack your question, but I hope I haven't been supposed to put down 13 bags of urea per acre!!! :) FWIW, for brassicas, I normally put down 4, maybe 5, bags and call it good. Now then...do I get record growth? No, probably not, but I get plenty of boost to the plants at that rate and no deer have ever complained. :)
 
That is my thought as well but, with the arguments I’ve been having lately I wanted to make sure I was on the correct hill if I was gonna die on it haha. With that said, we could both be wrong and need 13 bags . Glad I’m not alone either way.

You do need the 13 bags.
46-0-0 is 46% nitrogen
 
Is the recommendation for 300# of 46-0-0? Or 300# of actual N? BIG difference.

Ex: Qty (2) 50# bags of 46-0-0 = 100# of 46-0-0 = 46# N per acre.

Soo…. 300# of 46-0-0 = 46 x 3 = 138# N / acre.

FWIW, anything over 100# of N is a bit crazy for brassicas.
 
I was using the 300# as an example which pulled from Dbltree blanked recommendation from his brassica thread.

This is a great example though, unless I am reading it wrong. Farm Boy says 13 bags and Bassattackr seem to being disagreeing unless I am reading the above wrong.
 
Guessing Dbltree was saying 6 bags of 46-0-0.

I personally would never put 300 pounds or 13 bags of nitrogen on Brassica.

I guess if you had a soil test and it stated 300 per acre you might want to.....not me.

Planting and growing brassicas

Brassicas require plenty of nitrogen so plan on tilling in 150#'s per acre of 46-0-0 urea (46#'s of actual nitrogen per hundred pounds) Urea must be tilled in shortly after applying or before a heavy rain or you will lose most of it thru denitrication.

In the farming world if something calls for x amount its refers to actual lbs per acre.
Nitrogen come in many different forms all with different amount of nitrogen per lb.
 
Nope not at all saying that.
every 100 lbs of product of 46-0-0 has 46 lbs of nitrogen.
My conment was on different forms.
Here r some examples
1.dry 46-0-0
2. Liquid comes in 28%or 32%
3. Gas / anhydrous or NH3 is 82%
 
A 50# bag of urea contains 23# of actual N. 4 50# bags of urea = 92# of actual N.

An additional 17.4# of urea will get you the 8# of N you’re short.

So: 217.4# of urea gets you to 100# of N.
 
Keep in mind, you get nitrogen "credit" from your organic matter in your soil as well. I've seen estimates of about 20-25# of nitrogen per 1% OM. Having healthy soil and rotating crops that fix nitrogen can be cost beneficial to your wallet and is better in the long run than dumping endless synthetic fertilizer on it (I use plenty of synthetic fert, but slowly moving away from it except for corn/bean rotations).

Do any of you guys have experience with using liquid N for corn rather than urea?

I have 5 acres planted and due to schedules etc. timing the post emergence urea application within the needed rain window to not lose all of it is extremely difficult for me. Can i just spray it when I clean up the weeds mid summer when the corn is around 24"?

If so, what brands, rates, tips etc. have you guys found that have done it?

NO you can't put it on corn when it is up, it will burn / kill it.
But it sure does a good job on burn down when added to round up and that would b a good way to get your nitrogen on
Over the years spraying there’s always one or two guys that don’t turn a field in to spray until it’s already up. Or the guy won’t pay last years bill until June 1 so we spray liquid on corn that’s 1-3 leaves. YES it burns it, NO I wouldn’t do this regularly on purpose, but I will say after those fields came out of it I swear they always looked awesome.
I have had issues spraying 50+# of 28% with my burn down on big rye and it seemed the nitrogen flash burned the rye and didn’t let the chemical get absorbed.
