From the Iowa DNR:
Fish Kill Near Fort Dodge Appears to Be of Natural Causes

DES MOINES – A natural fish kill claimed hundreds of channel catfish above the upper dam on the Des Moines River at Fort Dodge. Staff with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources investigated the area and found dead channel catfish measuring 8 to 13 inches.

Tests of the water did not indicate contamination was the cause. Dissolved oxygen levels were fine and the water chemistry was fine, said Scott Wilson, environmental specialist with the DNR Environmental Services Office in Mason City.

Since only channel catfish of a certain size were found dead, the cause of the fish kill was a species specific natural fish kill. A person canoeing the river reported seeing dead fish, prompting the investigation.
