I don't know about that river but...fly fishing for bass & panfish is a blast. There's nothing like a Largemouth on a fly or enticing a big sunny to smack your fly.

I live about 2 miles from the Des Moines River but have never thought about fly fishing it. I don't know where you are in SE Iowa but you should try any of the small lakes like Lacy, Segema, or Wapello, or almost any farm pond. Yesterday about 3:00 I caught about 30 bass and as many bluegills and one catfish all on the surface on a green foam bodied gurgle pop with a yellow marabou tail. Very little movement of the fly was needed and most of the bass hit as soon as it hit the water. Lots of these fish were caught within 50 or 100 feet of where we swimming with 6 adults and 4 kids 10 minutes before. Experiment a little and if you are really interested in flyfishing visit flyanglersonline.com and read the stuff from the panfishing expert from southern Iowa. You will learn a lot. Good fishin!

What Bowmaker said...

I have had great fun at Lake Wapello fly fishing for big bluegills and crappies, with the occasional bass thrown in too. I think you are probably better off in a pond or lake with a fly rod. Good luck.
