Higher Taxes Mean Big Sales for Gun Makers

5/21/2009

During uncertain economic times, many companies have trouble paying the bills, much less federal taxes. However, the firearms industry is delighted to be paying high revenue taxes, according to St. Joe News.

According to a recent Department of Treasury report, the firearms industry paid more than $98 million in excise taxes in the fourth quarter of 2008—a 31-percent increase from the same period in 2007.

The National Shooting Sports Federation president Steve Sanetti credits the high taxes with an increased demand for firearms and ammunition.

“Since the November elections we’ve seen an increase in firearm ownership, coupled with an unprecedented level of attendance at firearm safety courses nationwide,” Sanetti said. “Americans are buying firearms, and they’re taking the proper precautions to ensure they exercise their individual Second Amendment rights safely and responsibly.”

The taxes collected by the government are redistributed to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to preserve wildlife habitats, manage wildlife and shooting ranges, educate hunters and wildlife research.
