Honey Locust Trees & Tires

Hey guys,

I bought a farm that has 5 acres of thick honey locust trees. Some areas are tough to walk through because it’s so dense. I’ve cut several down and applied herbicide to the fresh stump which works but will take forever to get the farm where I want it.

What is the quickest and most simple way to remove several acres worth of honey locust trees without them re-sprouting? I also have a bunch of bush honeysuckle in the same area.

Also - I have an old Ford 8N with tubed tires for mowing paths. How do I protect those tires from punctures? I know it’ll be an issue where these trees are. My local tire guy says I can’t use slime. I am hoping there’s some type of barrier I can apply on the outside of the tire.

Thanks!

My situation doesn't sound as bad as yours but you'll be battling them for awhile unless you can get in and pull most of the root out completely, stack and burn. Even with stump treatment, the roots will attempt to sprout eventually. If they are small enough, you could get a skid steer with the right attachment and pull them out roots and all. If they're big/mature, the only way I know is to girdle, apply herbicide, and then monitor for roots sprouting for a year or two. Those sprouts you can foliar treat I believe.

There is a product called “AmerSeal” that can be used in tubes I believe. It is for more heavy duty applications than straight Slime.
Slime also makes a “tube” specific version. Tire guys just hate the mess when they have to provide a repair.

Thorns are going to be a problem unless you idle or drop the trees and fire. A guy near me did have an excavator come in with a tree saw to knock down locusts in a pasture but someone would need to treat the stumps behind it to keep from having sprouts then fire in a year or so to burn through and burn the piles and thorns on ground. Otherwise dozer like 1983 said. How big are trees?

I have tons of thorns & use that industrial sealant - almost never have a flat. The only exception is tubes.
Here’s stuff I got last & I got the pump- makes it crazy fast & easy. Almost bullet proof
There’s lower priced stuff for sure that works really well but if u want heavy duty no flats…. Worth the $.

Here’s lower priced that also works really well ….

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your advice.

I’m leaning towards hiring a dozer in late July/early August to doze the honey locusts in piles that help with access and channel deer movement, and then broadcasting a brassica/cereal rye mix in late August. Then when the root suckers sprout hire a guy with a drone to spray Triclopyr in hopes that’ll kill them off. Thoughts on this strategy or how I can make it better?

I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

How would you handle all the root sprouts?

I would keep an eye on it after the dozer, bushhog next spring to get the sprouts, then follow the bushhog up with your Triclopyr and Picloram
