Yep! Lots of small things that could be ironed out on this.. if you want to party hunt and shoot a buck, you need to have purchased an anysex tag for that season. Or if you only purchased an antlerless only you can only shoot additional antlerless while party hunting etc.. The over abundance of antlerless tags is not good. Gives people too many options. Extra doe tags does take a toll on the buck harvest! People no longer have to decide between shooting a doe for meat or going home empty handed. They can fill their doe tag and still hunt for a buck. Groups of 10+ guys may split their tags 50/50 between does/bucks without any doe tags. Give those same guys 10 anysex and 10 doe tags they may hunt a lot more just to fill more tags. The bucks are vulnerable for a longer period of time the longer groups have excess tags.. also might be wise to look at small changes first that have a greater chance of passing in the legislature. Would give everybody a better gauge on public support for a few issues without being overly controversial. One change that I think would help considerably is combining/requiring hunters to use the “antlerless” tags the same season as their anysex. If you want to use antlerless tags during a shotgun season, you must purchase an any sex statewide first. Pick one firearm season like it used to be. The loophole allowing us to hunt shotgun and late muzzy both has definitely been detrimental, no way it couldn’t have been. Guys basically had 4wks of firearm season with almost endless tags in areas.
With 1/3 or more of the counties stopping antlerless sales, those guys are pretty much back to the old standard of choose 1 firearm season and go. That will help, albeit late, but is it fair that the other half of the state still gets 2 seasons.
The amount of guys that have shot 3+ bucks going archery/SG antlerless/late MZ probably hasn’t even been considered. Throw all of the antlerless tags available those three seasons in the mix and then consider the affect on populations. While I think the HUSH Program is beneficial, it justifies a slaughter for some.
