hunting gear checklist

Alan,
Here's a couple things you should take to the woods with you, especially when you're just starting out.......Yourself and your bow.

Don't worry about all the gimmicky items, they'll be more of a hinderance to you when you're just starting out. Get some camo on, get in your stand, and the rest will come naturally over time. Too many guys and gals (myself included) get caught up in the accesory end of hunting and don't spend enough time in the tree. The only other thing you should have with you right away is a set of bino's. Get yourself used to the way deer move, how they act, and what you need to do to stay un-noticed. After doing this for a while, you'll start to figure out what other things can help you maximize your hunts. I'm not saying those items aren't useful, but you need to know when and how to use them first, otherwise they might do you more harm than good.

Critr is dead on. Just like anything else, start with the fundamentals. A lot of the "gimmicky" items are for guys that have hunted for years and need that one more thing to try out. I learned the sport on my own. My dad took me bird hunting a lot as a kid, but never hunted deer, and never had a bow. Time spent in the tree is like time in the classroom. You will learn every minute out there. Don't try to eat the whole steak at once, take one bite at a time. Sorry, cheesy line from an old boss I had, but it makes sense. There are a lot of guys on this site with way more knowledge than I have. That's why I read posts. Always learning and I've been chasing deer with a bow for 13 years now.
