Meeting to Discuss Future of Iowa's Natural Resources Scheduled for Feb. 5 at Marshalltown

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is hosting an informal gathering of hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts to discuss the current financial status and future plans for the Fish and Wildlife Trust Fund in Iowa. The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Grimes Farm, located at 233rd Street, about 4 miles southwest of Marshalltown. Anyone with an interest or opinion on the outdoors is encouraged to attend.

Additional meetings in central Iowa at Indianola, Des Moines, Ames, Newton and Carroll will also be scheduled during the month of February.

The Iowa DNR will present a brief history on the Fish and Wildlife Trust Fund which utilizes the fees collected hunting, fishing and trapping licenses, including success stories and issues on the horizon facing hunters, trappers and anglers.

"We see survey after survey that shows natural resources is a top form of recreation by Iowans and we want to discuss how we are working to improve our natural areas here locally, as well as across the state," said Ken Herring, division administrator for Conservation and Recreation with the Iowa DNR. "We see our natural resources as a quality of life issue, an economic development issue, and as an environmental health issue.

"The fish and wildlife trust fund has a major impact on outdoor improvements in Iowa. The fund belongs to our hunters and anglers who purchase licenses and pay the fees to hunt and fish in Iowa. We would like to hear from as many of them as possible about which direction they would like outdoor recreation in Iowa to take in the future," said Herring.

The fish and wildlife trust fund is a state constitutionally protected fund supported by hunting and fishing license sales and federal excise taxes paid on ammunition, fishing tackle and other hunting and fishing supplies. The fund receives no tax payer money from the state general fund and is used to promote, improve and acquire areas to hunt and fish in Iowa.

"We will discuss our current request presented to the legislature to raise hunting and fishing license fees as well as what we are planning to do with the funding should the request be approved. And of course, we want to hear directly from our hunters and anglers," said Herring.

The meeting offers an opportunity for hunters, anglers and trappers to learn more about how their license money is spent and to discuss local priorities with DNR fish, wildlife and law enforcement staff in their area.
