Management/cull buck identification question

So there's been quite a bit of discussion in a couple of the threads about problems with high grading where young bucks with great potential dont get to reach their potential. Similarly quite a bit of discussion about the need to remove inferior genetics as well. My question is at what age of deer do you say they need to get taken out? I will post an example buck at the end. I have no history with him. I think he is 3, but could be older. He is a pretty good sized 6. Ive let him go a couple times because I thought he was still young, but maybe I shouldn't have. 016578000502150-90-4-10222025031708-SYFW01239.jpg016578000502150-83-4-11102025084346-SYFW01935.jpg

Don Higgins has some pretty good insight to this IMO. What he does on his farm is something most can’t replicate but has value. That deer IMO needs to go IF you are after HIGH scoring deer. Let alone taking him out of the gene pool it opens a spot in the carrying capacity of your farm for a deer that may have more points and a HIGHER mature score. IF he is in fact three I think that is when Don starts culling the bucks as they show enough of what they will be at 5/6 that it is not something that will ever be super high scoring. If any mature deer is what you are after then he will get mature in a couple years but if I was betting he would not be 170” plus at 5+.

I truly believe the term " cull bucks" gets thrown around WAY to much.
Would really like to know how many actually send in a tooth to get the age analyzed?

I've had the horrible genetic trait here for 30 years, (no browtines.
Like none,zip, natta....
I've tried (by listening to others) to kill those bucks but it's here and here to stay.
Free range deer, you, me ain't gonna change that. My opinion.

Just gonna throw this out there, take it how you want.
The (no browtine thing) is right here, like basically in a square mile area.
I see many bucks on the hoof and killed 2 mile away from me (ground central) and those bucks have brow tines.
I truly believe I've got does here that throw that disgusting genetic trait.
Been seeing it every year including this year (again).
Good friend 3 miles from me has a great group come n hunt every year. They kill lots of bucks. I've never seen them kill a buck with no browtines nor do I ever see bucks a few miles away without them?
Now, we all know bucks will roam miles to breed but does are homebodies. Born, raised n bred in a fairly small area.
Another trait here that's common, we like NEVER get a clean 5x5.
Almost every buck that gets to 3.5 throws split G2s. Mostly one side but often both.
That trait is very common for a wider range, 2 miles each way from me (ground central).

Over the years, I believe the term " cull buck" is just an excuse to kill a buck because you " need to".

Wish I could pinpoint the doe and her offspring doe fawns that have the no browtine trait. I'd wipe them all out. Lol.

Thanks guys for reassuring what I already thought. Gave myself the green light on him tonight and he read the script. Deer movement was awesome. Saw a wide 8 that I had on the hit list, but never gave me a shot. Multiple does running. Saw my main target buck several hundred yards away. Then this 6 came from behind me and gave me a 20 yard shot. Only went about 50 yards. This is my first buck with a bow. It was so much fun. Definitely hooked for good. Now I can plant trees tomorrow without worrying about ruining my hunting.image000003.jpg
