Hunters cut deer herd by 1,000

LINCOLN — Hunters killed an estimated 1,000 antlerless white-tailed deer during a special three-day hunt in eastern Nebraska last week.

The preliminary total indicates that the hunt was a success, said Kit Hams, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's big game manager.

Hunters bagged 220 antlerless whitetails during the same period last year, but they were limited to archery equipment.

“If we killed 800 additional deer, that's a good thing,'' Hams said.

The special season last Friday through Sunday was limited to antlerless whitetails in the Missouri River and lower Platte River corridors. Any legal weapon was allowed, including high-powered rifles, archery crossbows and muzzleloaders.

Unlimited permits allowed hunters to bag two antlerless deer per permit. An antlerless deer can be a female or a young buck whose antlers are no more than 6 inches in length.

Wildlife managers decided to target the region's antlerless deer because the herd is too large, hard on farm crops and a highway safety hazard.

Thinning the herd of female deer is the only method of reducing deer populations, wildlife biologists say.

The hunt also provided a test of the Game and Parks Commission's new system for hunters to check in deer. Rather than hauling a carcass to a station in a nearby town, all Nebraska deer hunters, except those hunting during the November firearm season, may check in deer by calling 800-405-7700 or by going online.

Hams said about two-thirds of the hunters who bagged a deer during the three-day hunt used the new system.
