Need a summer plot

I was going to plant alfalfa in a 3 acre plot but the rain has delayed me too long. Now I'll do it in August. I'd like to plant something for the summer what do you recommend? I'm thinking buckwheat. Whatever I do, I'll take it out in August.

For your purpose I'd say buckwheat and/or cowpeas.

FWIW, I just checked on my two buckwheat plots today that were planted about 3 weeks ago. Great germination and the plants are about 4"-5" already. There were turkeys in both plots and surprisingly, one didn't leave even after I drove into the corner of the plot with the tractor.

I would go with buckwheat...cheap and easy and perfect for this time of year.
