Needing help with Tripods and tree-arms...

Scooonie

I've recently bought a new Camcorder and I'm looking to put it to use this spring turkey hunting. I've been looking into tri-pods and to be honest I never knew they could get as expensive as they do. I've heard the best to have is something with a fluid head on it? I guess that help out with the range of motion I'm assuming? I might be wrong..If anyone could steer me in the right direction to purchasing a good priced tri-pod and tree-arm would be awesome. Here is a link to one that I found and would like to get your thoughts...

Trying to film a hunt without a fluid head is like running a Ferrari on Ethanol.

GET ONE

the most economical fluid head is the Manfrotto 3130. it works for most consumer grade cameras.

and id also go with a Manfrotto tripod, and pick one that doesnt have the brace in the bottom of it, that gets in the way if you need to put the legs over your legs while sitting agianst a tree.

general rule of thumb, buy the best you can afford! and Manfrotto is my brand choice!!

Jess,
This is the head we use and it works great.

Bogen | Manfrotto 700RC2

We use the lone wolf tree arm and added an extension and for turkey have an el cheapo and put the bogen head on it... Also depending on where we are hunting I sometime use the pole cat bi-pod if I want to go light.

Are we talking hundreds of dollars for them or are they some what decent priced? Like the one I posted was a fluid head for $69 and that seemed to be a good price for one. Also, what do you guy's use for tree-arms Thomas?

Limb,

So that Manfrotto head should be able to fit on any tripod or tree-arm that I might purcahse or does it only work with certain ones?

Ya, Jesse, this stuff is very expensive..... but your footage will suffer if you go cheap. i have lots of footage to prove why cheap is not good...... however sometimes things work.

Here is the entire identical setup that I use

Tripod

The first thing I did was to remove the center post and cut it in half. Drilled a new hole so the threaded plug would fit back in. I did this so you can actually sit under the tripod. It is very comfortable with this type of setup. No center braces and each leg can movev independantly of the others. I put the side ones way out to give me space. Works like a charm. As far as tree arms I bought a tree pod, threw that screw in thing in the scrap heap. You can never screw it in level, and no matter what it would bounce. I made a plate that the tree-pod mounts onto that ratchet straps to the tree and has a leveling feature on it. I will try to post a pic if I get time. I know there are commercial ones that are simmilarly designed, can't think of the brand.

Go to Ebay and type Dnyapro tripod legs in the search it will get you to a great tripod that you can get for 20 bucks a piece. I just bought one and put a Bogen 501 head on it. You don't need to alter it at all it gets low enough you can use it to turkey hunt. I will put it against any tripod on the market.

We use the Vanguard Tracker 2 for our Canon XL2. It is around $100 shipped at amazon.com and works very well. You can not go wrong with this, especially for $100.

scooonie,
i agree with Limb Chicken, i had a tripod that came with my cam, good for house pics but found out the hard way, it didnt hold up in the outdoors. It broke at the top where it mounts near the handle, lucky cam fell in my lap not to the ground. I finally went to best buy a bought a700 series fluid head, jvc. I like it because the legs are totally adjustable, 3 way height, &spread, and the camera is not so top heavy that that it wont break the base. it also has a tilt option that you can lock into place. tilts left or right, up-down handy for goofy angles.
