DNR Investigates Fish Kill Near New London

NEW LONDON – A fish kill in South Big Creek in Henry County near New London is being investigated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The fish kill is believed to have been caused when a hose ruptured during manure being pumped from a dairy operation owned by Dalarna Farms of New London. The manure flowed to a ditch and then to an unnamed tributary before reaching South Big Creek.

The DNR will be doing an assessment of the dead fish on Monday, but it is expected the total could be in the thousands along approximately three-and-a-half miles of stream.

Rodney Potter of Potter Pumping reported the manure spill late Saturday evening. Large bales of hay were placed at three locations in the stream to slow the flow and Potter was pumping manure from the creek on Sunday to nearby crop fields.

Downstream livestock producers were advised of the spill and some fenced their cattle from getting to the stream.
