I've been bow hunting for 23 years and had a couple firsts with this hunt. First time shooting a buck in October and first time shooting a buck on the first hunt of the year.

I had only been in the stand about 30 minutes and heard leaves crunching when all the sudden a rooster spooked and flew into the corn. This got my heart pumping and after another 30 minutes a young buck walked past and I just sat back and enjoyed the encounter.

At 8 AM this nice 8 pointer walked in at 20 yards and I stopped him broadside. I could see he was big and mature so I squeezed off the shot. I could see it was a good hit but told myself I would give him 30 minutes no matter what (past has bit me a few times). The shot hit both lungs and he expired after a quick 100 yards.

Big thanks to my son for helping me cart out of the public land as well to my awesome wife for helping process him on Sunday!

Good luck to everyone this season!!
