One more day, and I'll be in Iowa...
It's been six years since my last trip. This year drew a non-resident archery tag, so I'm headed out for two weeks on my friend's acreage in Zone 5.
Many fond memories of my last trip, not the least of which was the meat from the fat doe I got, but a favorite one was my encounter with a little old lady in a walker outside a restaurant...
Her: "Are you a hunter?"
Me: "Yes ma'am" (expecting the usual California anti-hunter lecture)
Her: "A deer hunter?"
Me: "Yes ma'am, hoping so."
Her: "Good! Kill 'em. Kill 'em all, damn things wrecked my son's car last year!"
Me: (Relieved) "I'll try ma'am, I sure will try."
This year, hopefully a nice buck, but I'm gonna think of her, buck or doe, when I'm pulling back on that bow.
