OOS Turkey DIY Hunts

Anyone have any fun DIY turkey hunts they’ve done and recommend? Didn’t manage to get a Nebraska tag for the first time in years so open to options. Applying for Kansas tonight even though I’ve heard it’s terrible anymore. I’d rather go west and chase pretty birds over easterns but I’m not too picky.

I’ve missed the last few years but have found plenty of entertainment even on public in southwestern Wisconsin over the years. Hoping to go back this year. It’s not what it was 10+ years ago either but is still pretty good and the tags later in the season are still easy to get. I’m most familiar with the counties on the Illinois border. Rock co would be the furthest east I’ve hunted. Green/Lafayette and all the ones west and nw of there all good too! Can give you more details if you are interested! As far as public land gobblers go it’s near the top.

Don't know much about turkeys, but they were fired up last weekend in NW Mo. Chirping, gobbling, sounded like fighting, sure sounded like a big bunch in a corner of my home farm. I didn't go over to check on them.

I already invited Curtis to take the week off…. Come coyote hunt instead!!! Save $ on tags, gas, time, u name it!!!! No out of state turkey trips!!!! Coyote hunting!!!! Plus- u can do it in am, pm & then all night!! Sleep from like 10am to 3pm & keep hunting!!! That’s like 19 hours a day of hunting vs a fraction of that & u can shoot unlimited coyotes vs one turkey!! No brainer!!! ;) :)

I have chased them in KS, SD, NE, IL, MO, KY and TN

All had plenty of birds, except the last time we went to KS. Hunted there for 15 straight years and in 2021 it was miserable. I am talking 90% reduction of population. We use to go and tag out with 8 birds in 1.5 days. Last time we went I don’t think we saw 8 toms in 5 days. My contacts there still say it hasn’t recovered, really sad as it was a blast.

Coyotes don’t strut and gobble and turkeys are way better eating

I shoot coyotes turkey hunting all the time without even trying. But I’m not going to go out of my way to target them when there’s gobblers to chase. Heck we can wipe deer off of North America if it means turkey hunting stays.

Same for the farms I hunted. The rios seem to be super delicate to springs rains and bug hatches. I also think, word got out and everyone from all over the United States started chasing them. I remember toward the end one day I seen 4 different states driving around scouting the same BFE area I was hunting. Those were some fun times for sure.

Oh yeah it was noting to see 8-10 different state tags hunting while out there in 2018-2021.

But the hens were all dead too. They definitely had to have a disease issue as even the adult hens just poof vanished.

The first 3-4 years we obtained permission farms - the farms had 200-300 turkeys - I would guess < 20 remained in 2021
