Last night I made a shot on a buck I had seen on Monday night chasing 5 does very hard. He showed up yesterday afternoon at 2:45. I felt like I made a good shot just behind the shoulder. Saw the arrow stick about 3/4 of the way in with a lot of blood. Buck ran about 40 yards and stood for about 15 minutes. I watched him lay down and he sat for another 15 minutes with his head up. I watched him get up and walk over the hills and it sounded like he crashed.

I waited an hour before I got down and did not walk in his direction. I did cross his blood trail which had whole corn kernels in it so I am guessing I was a little further back than I had hoped. http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa432/ecuwil/photo-1.jpg This is the spot where I could see him lay. http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa432/ecuwil/photo2.jpg

I waited four hours and came back. Picked up a blood trail, but it started to fade but we were able to follow. I think we may have bumped him so we backed off.

I am going back at noon today but what do you think the chances are that he is mortal wounded?

sounds like a stomach hit, which is definitely deadly. i am pretty confident your deer is dead, but if you bumped him, he could be difficult to find.

I helped track one Sunday that was a very similar circumstance. It took close to 24 hours for him to die. We did find him though. Good luck

Dead deer...grid search the area if you have to and you'll find him. Good luck :way:

He's dead but that bump you gave him could have sent him quite a ways further. Give him at least 24 hours.

Any update....? My guess is that he made it over the hill and then died in his bed, very possible that he could live for awhile and hopefully the yotes do not get him?

Another in the dead camp fwiw could be a tough find if water nearby quite possibly headed ther best luck in your search

What a bad feeling. Looked for 4 hours with my dog this afternoon. Blood trail dried up so we started walking the area. May be a long shot but anyone in the east side of Iowa City/West Branch area able/willing to help look in the next couple of days?

Yeah I'm curious also, he head for water? How far he travel? How close was he to where you left off tracking him,,,and if you feel he was that good at picking his death bed? Thanks ,,,,

Found him 400+/- yards from where I made the shot. I passed within a 100 yards twice while looking for him on two different days. He was in a bottom and had crossed a creek. Never had to track a gut shot deer before so it was a learning experience for me.
