Attorney Generals Rally Opposition to Assault Weapons Ban

6/15/2009

Twenty-three state attorney generals sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder expressing opposition to the reinstatement of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, a 1994 ban on semi-automatic weapons.

The letter stated that authorities should enforce the gun laws already in place instead of instituting more gun laws, an idea that congressional members support.

"It is hard to believe the ban would be...effective in controlling crime by well-funded international drug traffickers, who regularly use grenade launchers, anti-tank rockets and other weapons that are not available on the civilian market in the United States,” stated a March 17 letter to President Obama from 65 Congressional Democrats.

Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott went on to show their support of hunters that responsibly use firearms.

“We share that appreciation for hunters and are committed to defending our Second Amendment rights, which is why we believe that additional gun control laws are unnecessary,” they wrote.

The letter also stated that the state attorneys general did not believe a ban on semi-automatic weapons would have any effect on the drug cartel violence in Mexico.

"I certainly share the president's desire to reduce violent crime in our country and across our borders," McDaniel said. "However, based on the facts available, there is no reason to believe this law will result in any meaningful reduction in such crime and, therefore, does not justify further infringement on Americans' Second Amendment rights."
