Orange Army

I'll be out too. I got a couple bucks I would love to get a shot at. One I could have killed for sure during archery a couple weekends ago, but had no shot through some brush as he made a rub for 3 minutes at 20 yards. I would so much rather get them with the bow, but I wont hesitate with my 12 gauge. I'll just be sitting in a treestand.

I'm picky with the bow, will be even pickier with the ML I plan to use instead of a shotgun.

I got out the T/C Impact last night along with the "possibles bag". Blackhorn 209 and some Barnes solid coppers. Will be carrying the S&W .44 Mag hoping for an up-close encounter at the place I plan to sit.

Leaving the evil smokeless ML's in the safe. ;)

LOL, I'm planning to use my old 54 caliber Knight with iron sites for muzzy season this year. If I go out during gun 1 or 2, I'll use that as well. I killed my target buck with the bow and now I've got my eye on a management buck. I thought the nostalgia of the old gun would add to the fun. It's been a long time since I hunted with that gun. I'm sure everything will stay 80+ yards away out of spite.:)
 
Fairly quiet around me.
20 years ago I had to physically have someone watching my farm or dudes would show up & blow it up. I have not seen that in a long time.

We will be out with kids & a few fam or buddies. Some older bucks be nice to see some others get a chance at. We don’t have a lot of bucks that truly need to be hunted but a handful & if a hunter gets them that’s thrilled - I’m thrilled. I’ll be a glorified nature watcher this whole hunting season & totally ok with that.
 
Grew up in the orange army. At first not carrying a gun. For years I couldn't sleep the night before gun season. Ya know the best part was? Listening to the old timers talk about "the old days". They used to drive around and just watch, to old to walk or go on stand. But the stories they used to tell. About the time someone somewhere shot a big 8 pointer, or the giant on the wall, back in the Buck only days. (Back when deer were deer, and they didnt have NAMES, lol

Those old boys are gone now, almost makes a young fella kinda sad to think about. The days of the gun deer drive are fading. A bunch of the younger guys quit, the old guys are to old, and some of them passed away. Then we lost like 80% of the spots we used to hunt.

I have a place of my own now so I dont need it anymore. But Ill miss the comradery.
 
It’s interesting to hear about folks past & how the comradery of past was built or viewed. Good stuff!! In MI if you heard the same stories of 20-40 years ago it would be something like…. “We all go to the cabin. We sit, maybe come back for lunch. Go back out to our blinds & come back for a meal, cards, beer & hanging out. Usually the goal is to fill the buck pole.” Stuff like that.
In MI - actually it was super rare to hear of guys doing gun drives. Guns in rut & most the land was too forested for deer drives though.

Comradery for us today…. We all go sit & usually there’s a lot of kids. Some kids are old enough to sit on their own & often bring a buddy. Or we sit with a young kid or maybe a newer hunter. Fam, friends & a mix of new to old hunters. No deer drives. End of night we usually are getting a deer out if very lucky & hanging out. Cooking dinner or going out on occasion. Variety of things. I personally feel like the comradery side now is every bit as good as many years ago. Nostalgia or just being “young & crazed about hunting” might make me view the past different but, IMO or experience now…. The memories made & time spent is just as good as any time else.
I’ll openly admit something maybe some won’t say…. Having quality hunting, deer folks excited to hunt & a balanced well managed area to hunt adds to the enjoyment. I personally love going out & sitting with people & “deer watching”. Maybe it’s a 3 year old we absolutely won’t shoot. Or a big doe group getting messed with by bucks. A 6.5 year old 120” buck that we after finally shows up. All fun stuff…. & I can see that the kids love learning & their minds are building memories real time in front of my eyes. Whatever the form of hunting - you are outside, love this for a reason & IMO- any experience can be amazing. & heck, the dude hunting alone, spending time in God’s great outdoors- solitude & peace ….. that’s a comradery in a different sense & I bet most hunters love having that experience as well.

Ditto. Almost to a tee.

Contemplated not going home this year for the first time in over 30 years. Oldest son has bball and work so he's pissed off at the world that he can't go but the youngest really wanted to still go, so him and I are heading back home. For me it basically came down to this is the only time of year I get to see some family and friends I've hunted with for over 30 years. Not a whole lot to do with shooting a deer but stories and hanging out with everyone is pretty invaluable. Man I could go on for days on this topic. Good times great people. Been blessed.
