Peas for foodplot

Does anyone plant peas for a spring/summer plot?

If so what brand have you planted and how did they turn out? Looking for a summertime plot before planting fall plots.

I haven’t heard of any one in iowa doing a summer pea plot. Winter peas yes.
Hmmmmm. I know I’ve read on them before. I don’t think u r gonna get the results like soybeans but…. I’ll do a lil digging. Stuff like this…. If u have a little space - try it!!!!

When you say fall plots, what are you intending to plant?

If brassicas, my spring go-to is crimson clover. Its inexpensive, easy to establish, and fixes a ton of nitrogen.

They do peas up in my area heavily in the spring (close to canners)- deer don’t seem to flock to them fwiw. They still prefer the soybeans and alfalfa

Both spots I would try would have beans and alfalfa nearby. Might be worthwhile to try a different summer blend for these small little areas. Appreciate the help guys!

Spring peas / Field Peas may not last the summer heat, depending on where you're at. Weed control will be your biggest issue with field peas. They are a cool season plant, so you may lose the field come summer.

Other options could be to mix / drill spring wheat in with the peas to help with weed suppression, or frost seed clover and mow until fall.

Any type of clover will be a much better option for N credit over field/spring peas, cowpeas or soybeans. It's not even close.

I too was considering iron clay cowpeas this yr. I'm going to plant sorghum and peas in alternating rows in my drill around outside of my soybean plots this yr let the peas vine up the sorghum figure it can't hurt and see how the deer use them.

Sounds interesting. Have you established planting rates, seed depths yet? My pheasant and quail population is steady and growing...I could see this being good for the birdies in the winter especially.
