Two Arrested In For Deer Poaching, Marijuana Growing
WATERBURY, VERMONTT - State Game Wardens arrested a man and woman in Rochester Sunday, July 26, in what started as a deer poaching investigation, but resulted in a search warrant being executed and marijuana growing operation being discovered.
The case began on November 22, 2008, when a deer was reportedly shot and killed at 1:30 in the morning along Route 100 in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
</st1:City>Rochester by the operator of a truck who was using his headlights to illuminate the deer. State Game Warden Keith Gallant responded, finding blood at the scene, which was later DNA test matched to an 8-point buck killed and reported by Andrew Stringer of <ST1<st1:City w:st="on">Rochester</st1:City> in an attempt to claim it as his rifle season deer.
The search warrant was executed in <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1Rochester</st1:City> Sunday by Wardens Keith Gallant, Donald Isabelle, Dale Whitlock, and Christopher Connor at the residence of Andrew Stringer, 23, who confessed to illegally taking the buck. Stringer was arrested and charged with taking deer in closed season and taking deer by illegal means. The head of the buck and a rifle were seized by the wardens.
The deer jacking violation carries a fine of up to $500, up to 60 days in jail, possible forfeiture of the rifle and deer head, and restitution for the deer of up to $1,000.
While conducting the investigation, wardens located a marijuana cultivation operation in a bedroom of the residence and seized 48 plants as well as growing equipment. Stringer and his girlfriend, Desiree Boardman, 19, were arrested and charged with felony level cultivation of marijuana, which carries a fine of up to $500,000 and a 15-year jail sentence.
Stringer and Boardman were cited to be arraigned in Windsor District Court on August 25.
