Poor Mans Plot

Hey all,

I'm sure this topic has been beat to death in the past, but I just got permission on a new property that has no food. I found a spot that should be good for an acre food plot. I killed everything off and am hoping to get some seed on the ground in the next couple of weeks. The vegetation wasn't super thick...is it worth trying to get the thatch off or should I just broadcast the seed into the killed off thatch? I have access to a 4 wheeler and a drag. I could probably get a mower back there as well. I don't have much experience and the property is a good drive from where I live so I wanted to get some input ahead of time.

Thanks!

Rob is spot on. Burn it...one thing that I have found over the years is the areas with little vegetation growth are severely lacking soil nutrients. Basically what I am telling you is that if weeds are having a hard time growing in this area you had better add some fertilizer and lime to it or you could have a pretty poor looking plot.

If you are scared to burn, you can drag a harrow around. Once it's "full", pull to the edge of the plot, pick it up to "empty" it, and then keep dragging. You can get the plot pretty clean pretty quick with that method, especially if you have a second person to lift the harrow while the first drives off.
