what do you guys hunt on public or private...how can someone just starting out in deer hunting like me find some good land to hunt....

I think the last time I hunted deer on public was 1990. Even then I had access to private but the public was just across the road. I've been lucky enough to hunt private ever since.
How to find private? Go knocking on doors during the summer or January/Feb. Spring and fall are busy times for farmers, you are more apt to catch them during the summer or late winter. You might try offering to help on the farm in trade for hunting rights. Maybe stop by a local grain elevator some morning. Sometimes farmers congregate there for morning coffee. Introduce yourself and ask if anybody needs any help thinning the deer on their farm.
The way you hope to hunt might be a factor in your odds of gaining permission. If you are a bow hunter, you might be better received than a large party of gun hunters. Do you want to shoot does or are you strictly a trophy hunter? That might make a difference to some landowners.
