Hunters Might Get More Shots at Problem Geese
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) South Dakota wildlife officials working to alleviate problems with geese that fail to migrate have a new idea.
Game, Fish and Parks commissioners will consider a proposal early next month under which hunters in 14 counties would be allowed to shoot eight Canada geese a day Aug. 14-22. The possession limit would be 32 birds. The state tries to maintain its Canada geese population at about 85,000 birds. A survey last year indicated a population nearly double that. The geese damage crops.
The proposal follows a pilot program last fall that teamed hunters with farmers for the early fall goose season in September. The 20 hunts, in which groups up to eight hunters per field were allowed to shoot at problem flocks, were popular and led to a raffle system for the slots.
