Well it all started out last tuesday night, March 25. Taylor came down for the night and we went and shot down at Double A just to make sure that we were on for the trip. We got home and got everything packed and finally got to bed at about 2:00 a.m. During the process of getting into bed I cut my toe on a broadhead that I left there from sharpening earlier. Than we we started the drive the head lights shorted out... GREAT START!!
So 4:00 came early and we were gone by 4:30 am. We had a little over 600 miles to go to get to the public land i had researched. On the way we were seeing birds and it was awesome weather out!! We got to where we were going and about FLIPPED OUT!. I screwed up, I picked a horrible area and it was essentially huge wind swept dessert. It was way too big to hunt and just a disaster. So I got that big lump in my throat. When you know you screwed up and we headed to our back up plan. We got there and set up camp.
We put a game plan together for the morning. But when we woke up it was 11 degrees and freezing sleety rain. MISERABLE. We pushed on! Here are some pictures from Day 1. We heard a total of 6 gobbles, from about 40 different birds. This was the mornings attitude.
Here was the set up.
We were able to stalk in on a few birds later on in the day. We played cat and mouse with 13 jakes in an old burn off area with little stubby pines. No feathers though. We also cut off three toms 2 different times and had them within 30 yards with out a shot!! Back to camps for BRATS!! MMMMMM
The forcast for friday was awesome and we now had some birds figured out! Most of them skirted us but I had two toms coming in on a string. They were at about 30 yards and I took some pictures. They were closing ground when someone wondered by and busted them outta there. You gotta love hunting close to the road! I should have been flinging sticks instead of taking pictures though. We stayed here all day!! It was a long sit but we had action off and on all day! I also missed a jake at ten yards on film. WHOOPS. Had my slider on the 30 yard mark. It happens I guess.
Here was Fridays set up.
Here you can see birds across the road working us. Little blurry but you can see them coming!
Toms coming in!! They were closer than they look.
Friday came and went without out a kill, Just more excuses. We got some unreal video footage and had some hens at 2 yards which was pretty exciting!! It was an awesome day. So we went back and screwed around at camp and had a killer plan for saturday morning!! We woke up saturday and the wind was blowing 45-50 mile an hour and was raining!!! It was miserable! I rolled over and asked taylor if he really want to go out in that and he was back snoring before I could even finish the question. We slept in and got camp cleaned up. We had some nasty weather moving in so we decided to go home a day early. But decided to go the long way around all the public ground. About 2 miles into the drive we spotted 4-5 toms strutting and about twenty hens up over a rise. we were in street clothes and threw on our camo coats and hats and grabbed the camera and my bow. And to make a short story loonnnng... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I snuck up over the rise spotted them. Ducked back down and adjusted my sight for 40 yards. Rose back up and smoked him!! not a big tom by any means but a mature bird none the less (well a 2 year old ) Here are some more pictures!! It was a shame we couldn't both score but we had our chances and put one down! It was an amazing trip and we had a good time!!
Better attitude.
Wait till you see some of the video!!!!!
