Scrape ?

I was out at the farm tonight and saw several scrapes along a crick line that I usually find. But I came to a cedar tree that I had seen a small scrape at last week and noticed 5 scrapes all around the one side of it. I have never seen that many all together before. Any ideas why there is so many on one tree? They all looked really fresh, and about 1-2 feet apart.

I can't answer your question of why, but I have a similar tree. A lone oak in the middle of a field always has 6 or 7 scrapes every year. I call it the licking tree.
