i'm considering trying shot gun season this year but the only shot gun i have is a browning goldhunter with a field barrel on it can shoot slugs out of it with out doing damage

No problem, buy the Foster style slugs (cheap ones) as the added expense of sabots won't improve accuracy.

Back in the day I shot that same kind of gun for deer. Try using Remington 1oz sluggers 3", use an improved cylinder choke. You should be dead on at 50.
