Took advantage of Tuesday's nice weather to get out and try to fill the turkey tag along the Des Moines west of Luther. Hit the woods about 1:00 and spent the afternoon moving from ridge to ridge, calling and waiting. Even dosed off a bit in the warm sun.
About sundown, I decided to head back and maybe bust a group on the way. It was dead calm and the leaves were extra crunchy. Stopped near top of a ridge within sight of my truck and heard some rustling to my left. Just over the top of the ridge was a hen, scratching in the leaves. I brought my gun up and shot at 15 yds. Amazing she didn't spook but then again she was a young bird.
Other amazing thing was all the scrapes I saw yet not a single deer --- buck or doe. Maybe they're taking advantage of the moonlight!
Can't wait for late muzzleloader season.
