On a late season ML hunt in IL a few years ago, I had the biggest typical I have ever had on me in close range. He was feeding in a turnip plot we plated that Fall. I watched him feed, waiting for good light (legal) @ 70 yards. The time came, I squeezed off a shot, smoked filled the air, he ran off. I waited 45 minutes or so and got down, not one drop of blood. I had replayed the event in my mind several times and convinced myself that I'd hit some twigs that were moving in front of me after I shot. Never asked neighbor to walk property to look. Years later, I've harvested a deer that never dropped any blood (that I know of). I still don't know if I hit that big buck or not, still stck in my mind.
