The start of the rut is upon us.

FWIW, the cool temps sparked the deers at our place yesterday too. My son watched a nice buck yesterday AM jogging around looking rutty. He is a buck on the hit list for us this year, but probably option #3. Between that and the fact that he kept moving so much, my son passed him at 34 yards.

He and his friend hunted that evening (Sunday) too and had good movement, including a couple/three bucks. Nothing crazy or too chasey, but clearly the local herd was more visible than they had been. It's starting to shift and tomorrow's temp drop should rile them up something fierce IMO.

I was shocked how much activity I saw last night on my first sit of the year. Saw 2 very respectable mature bucks that made ya think twice working scrapes and dogging does around the picked corn along with multiple smaller bucks. One of the big boys let out a huge snort wheeze and long grunt towards one of the smaller bucks, that was pretty cool. My youngest son was sitting on the opposite side of the farm and saw the same thing but all smaller 2 1/2 year olds. He also saw a bobcat. this was his first solo bow hunt in a tree so he was pretty jacked. I was not expecting to see that much action this early.

Things really fired up yesterday. After the picture above called my son and told him where he should sit near my house yesterday evening. He hasn't killed a big buck, came close a couple times but never could seal the deal. I've taken my share so I'm letting him get the first opportunity.

He got in my favorite stand an hour and a half before dusk and 45 minutes later deer started to cross the road. He had does all around him as well as a couple small buck. He was enjoying the activity when he heard footsteps behind him and then a snort-wheeze, when he peaked over his shoulder all he seen was a large set of antlers just a few yards behind him. The big boy stayed behind him and slowly went another direction. He was pumped when he got back to my house even though he never presented a shot and stayed calm throughout. Game on!

What's your go to strategy for that stretch?
That's my favorite stretch as well. Get my best action for cruising buck by hunting edges of known doe bedding areas. It could be any time of day.
