Tree stand advice

To condense this story I'll just start with this: I went to my tree stand Sunday evening and it was apparent someone used it Friday or Saturday. I've double checked my permission to be there and as of last night I was still the only one to have permission. So other than the note I'm going to attatch to my stand tonight is there anyhting else that I could do? Has anyone out there ever ran into such horse's arse! Trespass and use someone else's stand... I bet this person is a gem!

been in your shoes before and like you, i was more than a little hacked... unfortunately all the advice i have is get a good light portable and pack it in each time you hunt. OR stake the place out and

j/k -- get the license plate and let the authorities take care of it.

It happens quite a bit where im used to hunting. About the only thing you can do is catch them in your stand and talk them in person. Or maybe you could take out all the steps, and hope that wards them away from bringing their own. It's a crappy deal thats for sure. I hope you figure it out, or can catch the guy actually coming to or sitting in your stand, just be careful, you never know what kind of nut it may be

I'd suggest you only use strap-on steps (i.e. Lone Wolf), and maybe even lock your stand (if it can be folded back).

Thanks for the responses so far. But what makes me an easy target is I use ladder stands. My knees are all but shot, and I like the stability I get out of a ladder stand. I need to catch him there! But like LIV4rut said you don't know what kind of idiot this guy might be.

Talk about needing to clean your drawers out, I was getting ready to ascend a tree to a platform I hand built in a fork early one morning when I heard "HEY!" This is on family ground, and I knew my uncle wasn't hunting that day. I shined my light up there to see a guy we have turned in for poaching and trespassing before! This guy lives up the road a piece and he said he didn't think anyone would mind if he sat up there during the week. (It was a thursday, I was in college at the time and didn't have any morning classes) I figure he didn't think he would get caught during the week. Guy didn't work, claiming to be disabled, with a hurt back. After I calmed down and described to him what a general piece of crap he was, he got down out of the tree and left. I was mad the whole morning and only got madder the more I thought about it. (you know where you wanna break something and you shake your head and grit your teeth!)

A few years prior to this, this same $@%*sucker had the audacity to come to the tree I was in one morning about 8:00 and ask if he could hunt our ground! After telling him to leave, he shot a doe while leaving! This is when we turned him in for poaching, you couldn't kill a doe during that time.

I am getting upset again.

I had a guy put up a stand close to me and then took mine. How did I know that? He had cut a salt block in half and put one half in front of his stand and then the other half in front of where my stand was. He forgot to take the salt block with him when he stole mine. So I was going to hunt from his stand. I was in there about 10 min. when he came driving in the same field that the farmer just seeded a month or two before. I'd had never in 10 years driven in that field to get to my stand. When he pulled up he thought I was his cousin and when I pulled off my mask he about %#@*& his pants. I said I'll be down in a min. He was scared to death. I was so mad I could hardly talk. I told him someone stole my stand and that no good bow hunter stole from anyone. I was given that stand by a company to try and give them feed back about the stand and they were not on the market yet so whoever was caught with it I know did'nt buy it. I also told him I would kick the $#%&* out of the person who did this when I caught them. I stewed about this overnight and my friends really pimped me about him stealing it and I let him drive away. The next morning at 7am I went to his house and knocked on the door and he came out and told me he found my treestand, that someone had hidden it in the weeds. told him to save his story and that I was going to spread it around that he took it and he'd better hope he didnt take anymore tree stands and I left with my treestand. The bad thing about itis this dumb ass shot a 201" buck the following year. The DNR made him take them to the spot and they really made sure he did not poach it. He's know for that. I still get mad thinking about. Sorry, I feel beter now!

Here's what I would do- take several steps out so he would'nt be able to climb to your stand unless he has his own steps.

well dblmainbeam saw a guy coming through the woods playing army with a real gun. what does this have to do with your situation and why is this weird, you ask? well the guy was playing by himself and firing real shots at the fake enemy, maybe you oughta try it on this guy when you catch him there, make sure your fully clothed though. that would definetly make me quit hunting a spot with a weirdo like that around, maybe it will do the same for this guy

Have someone make you a plate that can be locked to the seat that would make it impossible to sitdown.

Don't know if this will work for you, but try hiding a trail camera close by to get a picture of the dumb a**.

I had that happen to me last year. Some dirt bag, trespassed onto our property and jacked my ladderstand up on his way out. Too bad I did'nt catch him, would have go to use the phrase : "Time to go mid-evil on your azz". This year I have cable locks on everything, and everything is snug.
Good Luck.

Yes this situation is not a good one. I have found though, a well used pair of socks hanging from a tree (secluded) can hinder any unwanted trespassers chance of getting any deer in that vicinity. They eventually will leave. Then you can take the socks down and get back at it..

Back when I use to bowhunt I found smashed cigarette butts in my treestand one time. So not only did the idiot help himself to my my treestand but he also (more then likely) let the deer know there was one there.
