Trout Stocking at Saganush Pond Postponed

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - The trout stocking planned for Tuesday at Saganush Pond in Council Bluffs has been postponed until spring due to low dissolved oxygen (D.O.) levels in the water.
Fisheries biologists with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources checked D.O. levels at Saganush Pond Monday, and found readings of 2.5 parts per million and less. Fish require D.O levels of at least 3.0 parts per million and higher to survive.
"Fish that are currently in the pond are probably stressed and may not survive the winter. Low D.O. levels (less than 3.0 parts per million) are not uncommon during the winter months in shallow Iowa lakes and ponds with heavy snow cover," said Chris Larson, fisheries supervisor for southwest Iowa.
