I know from experience that putting wire cages around your young trees is the only way to save them. It's also hard to keep the weeds and grass down inside those cages. I'm a farmer and instead of burning all of my soybean seed sacks, I cut a slit halfway thru the sack and put it down under my wire cages as a weed mat. Works beautifully and is free. Just talk to a farmer and tell him you will take all those sacks off his hands. Be prepared to pick those sacks up every evening during planting time as the farmer won't want to hassle with storing them.
