What to plant in clay soil

I have some areas (road width size) that lead into my larger food plots. I'd like to plant something in them but they are heavy clay and don't hold much water.

Some of the strips get a lot of sun; others don't get much.

Is there anything I can plant in them to provide a food source and ground cover. I'd like to plant a perennial so I don't have to replant every year. With the amount of sun varying so much, I guess two different types of seed would be required.

I haven't done soil tests, but other parts of the farm have been low in lime. I put lime at the rate of 3000 lbs per acre on this land and on my food plots as well.

Would afalfa grow in this type of soil? How about clover?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

clover

I planted clover for a friend in a clay soil area and he has the best clover I have seen for 2 years straight. I wish mine would look like his. Not sure if type of clay and everything is comparable to your situation, but it is an awesome clover plot.
