Why is around Sept 1st the best time to plant Rye,or Oats? I did last yr, seemed it got kinda tall before the deer munched on it.

Planted earlier it will get too tall and mature (rank and unpalatable) to deer and they won't eat it.

Planted to late it may not get enough growth to provide and feed at all.

An exclusion cage is the only way to tell for sure if deer are eating it or not. Often we think it isn't being touched when in fact they are just grazing it evenly. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
